The bird of paradise flower, also called a “crane flower” was first discovered in South Africa. Belonging to the genus “Strelitzia”, it is one of five belonging to that genus. The group was named Strelitzia after the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. Types of Flowers
As we said before, there are five types of plants and flowers that belong under this name. Here is a list with a brief description of each flower and its characteristics. The largest is the “Strelitzia Nicolai” whose flowers are blue and white. The plant itself can reach upwards of thirty feet tall. The second bird of paradise we come to is the “Strelitzia alba” who has lovely pure white flowers. Number three on the list is “Strelitzia caudata” whose or “mountain strelitzia” who’s smallish blooms are orange with bright green nodes. Our fourth bird of paradise is the “Strelitzia juncea”, whose other name is the “African Desert Banana”, or “Narrow Leaved Bird of Paradise”. With blooms that are a startling combination of pink, deep violet and burning orange, the crane shaped blooms are stunning. The fifth member of this well known family is “Strelitzia reginae”, the “Crane Lily” or also known as the “Bird of Paradise”. The beautiful blooms on this plant are flame orange, cobalt blue and bright yellow. This is the variety most often used in floral arrangements and home gardens. The bird of paradise flowers last a remarkable amount of time after they are cut making them a favorite of florists and gardeners alike. How to Care for the Bird of Paradise Plants
For all of their grandeur, the bird of paradise needs very little attention. They thrive in rich, loamy soil that must be well draining. And even though they are considered more of a tropical plant, they are very drought tolerant once established, however regular watering is appreciated by this beautiful plant. A mild fertilizer in the beginning and at regular intervals through the growing season is really all the care they need. If you live in a frost prone area, these plants must be protected, as they will not tolerate frost. Plant and enjoy! You will have many beautiful bird of paradise flowers to take pleasure in over the years. Now the only question is…. Which one will you choose?
