Fast Growing Shrubs

When you want to create privacy screens, buffers or foundation plantings in a hurry, there are a number of fast growing shrubs from which to choose.

Whether you are looking for evergreens, fall colors, flowers or scents, there is a variety to fit your space and your needs.



Evergreen Shrubs


These plants maintain their foliage color year-round. Pyracantha grows 10-12 feet, tolerates sun or shade and produces white spring flowers and orange-red berries from summer into winter.

Azalea reaches up to 6 feet, features dark green foliage, and spring blooms in white, red, yellow or orange. Holly, a winter favorite, has glossy leaves and produces bright red berries.

Arborvitae is available in a number of varieties and makes a good privacy hedge, growing to twelve feet tall. Yew is a fast growing shrub that will grow well in shade.

Lantana is evergreen in warmer regions, often producing mixed colors of flowers. They grow to six feet high and eight feet wide.

Flowering Shrubs


There are a number of fast growing shrubs that also provide flowers and scents. Grow oleander in sun or shade and enjoy pink, lavender, white, salmon or red flowers in spring into summer. Then it is time for beautiful fall leaf color.

Butterfly bush grows six feet in its first year and produces flowerets in red, purple or white that attract butterflies.

Lilac is an easy-care shrub with fragrant white, pink, lilac or purplish-blue flowers. It grows to nine feet.

Weigela flowers are available in a range from white through red. Mock orange shrub produces citrusy smelling flowers.

Deciduous Shrubs


Some fast growing shrubs loose their leaves in fall and become dormant in winter.

The rose of Sharon shrub reaches eight to ten feet, producing white, pink or purple flowers in late summer. Honeysuckle produces white flowers in spring and red berries in fall.

Red osier dogwood shrub produces white flowers in late spring and white fruit in late summer. It grows to nine feet tall and wide. Privet shrub is a popular hedge plant that grows quickly, reaching up to ten feet tall. Several varieties are available.
