Firecracker Plant

If you are looking for a striking plant that provides a dramatic explosion of color, and you live within a warm climate area, the firecracker plant will be a stunning addition to your garden.

The firecracker plant (Russelia equisetiformis), also known as coral plant or fountain plant, is a genus of evergreen shrubs or sub shrubs with showy flowers.

It is so named because of the multi-branched stems with rusty red colored tubular flowers which look like bursting fireworks.

This hardy plant, which can be grown in pots or garden beds, is a native of Mexico.

Features

Their beautiful cascading habit makes this plant a great choice for hanging baskets. They will bloom from late spring to fall, and possibly all year long in the right conditions.

When grown in the ground, plant in raised beds and let the long stems cascade down. They also make a stunning addition to a rock garden.

They are incredibly easy to grow and care for, and produce a flowery display in a brilliant red coral color.

As an added bonus, this garden favorite attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to your garden.

Growing Habits

Firecracker plants are annuals that typically reseed themselves, and can be treated as perennials in climates which stay above 35 degrees.

This is a tropical plant that does well in zones 9 through 11. They require full sun to partial shade in a well-drained area.

If you are growing them in pots, be sure that there are plenty of drainage holes. Plant in the spring and use a light, well drained potting soil for growing.

When planted in the ground, these plants can grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet, and sometimes up to 5 feet. Use a flower fertilizer every 2 weeks during the summer.

Water regularly and thoroughly, but do not overwater to prevent root rot. Let the soil dry slightly between watering.

Pruning these plants will keep them compact and prevent them from becoming too leggy. They will continue to bloom throughout the season, well into fall.

You can propagate by stem cuttings in the spring to increase the number of plants you have.

If it is drama you are seeking in your garden, then you can't go wrong with the Fountain plant.

Whether tumbling over rocks, cascading out of a hanging pot or in your garden beds, this plant will create a spectacular display throughout the entire growing season.
