Hawaii Tropical Flowers
Many of the flowers that we think of as native to Hawaii were actually brought to the islands from other tropical regions and have thrived in Hawaii's warm, sunny climate. This diverse selection of flowers has made Hawaii one of the biggest producers of exotic tropical flowers in the world.
Hawaiian Flowers
The state flower of Hawaii is the yellow Hibiscus, ma'o hau hele, a spectacular flowering bush that is native to Hawaii. Each flower lasts only one day, but new flowers are produced almost daily. Other varieties of hibiscus are found in Hawaii as well, in colors from white to red and pink. Anthurium flowers adapt to various soil conditions, but need good drainage. Provide a lot of light, but not direct sun, and water to avoid drying out. The anthurium will produce beautiful heart-shaped or tulip-shaped flowers in red and purple. Bird of paradise is a stunning flower used in dramatic floral arrangements for its unique shape and texture. Though not a native to Hawaii, this plant has become synonymous with Hawaii tropical flowers. Orchids, especially dendrobiums, have white or colorful flowers and are popular for corsages, hair adornments and floral arrangements. There are a large number of varieties of orchids growing in Hawaii.
The Ilima flower looks like a small hibiscus flower, at only one inch in size. You can find ilima flowers in pink, white, coral, red, yellow and orange. The juice is often used to promote strength and improve health. Yellow Ilima is the official flower of Oahu. Lokelani, or Rosa damascena, is a highly scented pink flower also referred to as the cottage rose in Hawaii. Pink Lokelani is the official flower of Maui and is a popular landscaping plant. The flower that is sacred to Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, is Ohia. It can be found in orange, yellow, white or red. Red Ohia is the official flower of the Big Island of Hawaii. The white Kukui blossom is the official flower of Molokai. These small Hawaiian flowers are popular for making leis. Plumeria grow wild in Hawaii. They can be found in bright shades of white, yellow and pink and are popular in arrangements. Tiare is an indigenous flower of Hawaii. Its fragrance is used in the making of many perfumes, along with White Ginger, a Hawaiian wetlands flower. The variety of color, shapes and scents available in Hawaii tropical flowers makes it difficult to select a favorite. Leis are traditionally presented to visitors upon arrival and departure from Hawaii and are made from an assortment of many of these flowers, so visitors can enjoy them all.
