Lipstick Plant
The tubular red flowers cascading from the tips of the aeschynanthus radicans, or lipstick plant, add an exotic touch. A native of the damp forests of tropical regions, it has some specific environmental conditions that must be met in order for it to thrive in our dry homes.
But when the proper conditions are met, it will produce beautiful flowers periodically throughout the year. Growing Conditions
Depending on the size of your plant, you have two choices for pot size. Plant the lipstick plant in a pot just big enough to accommodate its root ball, to encourage flowering. A larger pot will encourage the plant to grow larger and minimize the number of flowers produced. A root-bound plant will use its energy to produce more flowers. Once the plant is mature, it can remain in the same size pot. Use a soil that contains peat and holds moisture along with good drainage. Sand can be added for better drainage if needed. The aeschynanthus radicans needs between twelve and sixteen hours of sunlight every day, but avoid direct afternoon sun which can burn the leaves. Artificial grow-light bulbs can be used to supply the adequate cool and warm light needed. It should be placed above the plant for best results. After the blooms fade, pinch the plant back to encourage new growth and flowering. Flowers are generally more abundant in the fall, making spring the time to prune it back. Water should be at room temperature to avoid shocking the plant. Keep the soil evenly moist at all times, with adequate drainage. Drying out is deadly to this plant. Since the plant is accustomed to high humidity, mist it daily. Browning of the leaves or blackening of flowers is a sign that the air does not have enough moisture for the plant. Use a humidifier or run a fountain near the plant to provide additional humidity in dry homes. Fertilize every two weeks during spring and summer, using a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants. If the plant is not flowering for an extended period of time, it probably needs fertilizing or it is in too large a pot to force flowering. The lipstick plant is attractive in a hanging basket or trailing over the edge of a pot on a plant stand. The arching foliage tipped with beautiful flowers combine to make it a beautiful addition to any collection of houseplants.
