Money Tree Plant

A unique addition to our houseplant collections is the money tree plant (Pachira aquatica).

With only a short history in the United States, this plant's design came from Taiwan in the 1980's, and has quickly become popular.

The stems are manipulated during growth to form the twisted trunk it is famous for. A small plant can be trained to bonsai form by keeping it in a small pot to reduce growth and pruning regularly to maintain size. Left to grow naturally, it becomes a small and attractive tree.

Growing Conditions and Habits

Money tree plant is a native of South America where it thrives in the wetlands. The palmate leaves have five lobes and resemble a hand.

It can grow to over six feet tall and three feet wide. During its growth, growers braid three or more stems into one central trunk, allowing the umbrella of the plant to grow normally.

This gives it the appearance of a tree. It is usually grown as a houseplant, but can grow outdoors in zones nine through eleven.

Provide this plant with bright, indirect light indoors. It grows very well under fluorescent light, making it suitable for offices as well as homes.

By adding peat moss to regular potting soil, the plant will retain moisture and drain well. Water weekly, allowing it to dry slightly between each watering.

If you find the trunk gets wet when watering, try standing the pot in a tray of water and let it absorb water through the drainage hole. This will prevent water from sitting in the braided trunk and rotting it.

Placing the pot on a tray of pebbles provides the humidity it prefers. Fertilize the plant lightly every month during growing periods, reducing feeding and water in winter.

The only pruning required is for removal of dead leaves, or to alter the shape of the plant. If you move the money tree plant outdoors in the summer, provide dappled shade and increase watering and fertilizing.

History and Folklore

The plant is believed by many to bring good luck and prosperity. As such, it is a common gift to celebrate new homes or business ventures.

The five lobed leaves also represent the five elements of feng shui -- metal, wood, water, fire and earth -- and it is often used to balance a room lacking one of these elements.

The money tree plant may indeed bring you prosperity and luck. And although money doesn't grow on trees, you will be richer for having one of these unique and delightful trees in your home.
