Plant Caddy
We grow plants in all sizes and shapes, in containers large and small, for indoor or outdoor settings. And anyone who has a collection of potted plants knows that moving them around can be quite a task.
Whether your container plants consist of a few large, heavy plants or a large number of small plants, moving them to a new location, or to accommodate other uses for the space they inhabit, there is a plant caddy that can make the job easy. Why Use a Plant Caddy?
If you have a grouping of vegetable plants in containers on your deck, they can grow to become quite heavy and cumbersome. Tomato plants may have cages or stakes around them, and lifting them can be difficult, if not impossible. Lifting their weight can cause severe backaches and can be dangerous. Having wheeled caddies that the containers can sit on at all times allows you to move them when they need a sunnier spot on the deck, perhaps as the seasons change and exposure changes near the house. If you're having an evening get-together and need the deck space for guests, you can roll your heavy containers out of the way. For flowering plants, it's nice to be able to rearrange your plants to spotlight those that are in bloom, perhaps moving some that are spent to the back and peak blooming ones to the front. Also, as plants grow, some that started out short may become taller than others, and need to be rearranged to accommodate sun exposure. Additionally, since your containers have drainage holes, the water seeping from them can be damaging to some deck materials, leaving water stains and even rotting the surface. Indoors, since many houseplants can tolerate sun during different parts of the day, having your larger plants on a plant caddy lets you move them to get the correct exposure. It's also easier to water and mist plants when they're grouped together. They can be positioned anywhere in your home with the correct lighting, and rolled to a central location for cleanup, trimming and repotting. Types of Plant Caddies
You can find a plant caddy to accommodate any size plant. Wood, plastic, wrought iron and other metals are common materials used. Some are decorative while others are more utilitarian and function like a dolly. They are available in round and square sizes from twelve to twenty inches, and can accommodate up to 500 pounds of weight. Choose styles that have at least four casters for balance to avoid tipping while transporting the plant. Check that the caster or wheels roll easily and are made of a material that won't mar floors or carpeting if used indoors. Some have sides that allow for drainage to collect, while others will need a tray. For those with sides, check that the bottom of your container will sit inside the caddy. Flat surfaced caddies will usually allow for some overhang, but avoid too much overhang to prevent the plant falling during a move. You can also find a plant caddy that can carry several small potted plants. Many look like an old-fashioned tool box or shoeshine box, with sturdy wood handles, that can be used for transporting small plants to the greenhouse or closer to a water source. The plants can be left in these caddies to create a clustered look, adding to the convenience. Whether you have a single, large tree in a pot or heavy vegetables growing in containers, using caddies lets you move them with ease, without breaking your back.
