Rainforest Plants

Just the word ”rainforest” brings to the mind’s eye a lush, tropical environment filled with color, abundant growth and luxurious rainforest flowers and plants.

While not all rainforests exist in the tropics, take the temperate areas in Washington State for example, the growth of the rainforest plants is lush, green and sumptuous.

Types of Rainforest Plants

The list of plants that grow in a rainforest is a long and varied one. From the delicate looking orchid to the trees so massive that their huge waxy leaves can be used as an umbrella, the rainforest has an almost infinite variety to offer.

Some of the canopy trees can grow to an amazing 120 feet tall. There are also quite a few fruit trees that grow in the rainforest.

Trees such as avocado, citrus of all types, coffee and banana are just a few of the food that the rainforest provides for its animals and people.

Another common type of plant most commonly found in the tropical rainforest is the air plant, or “epiphyte”.

This is a plant whose roots are not the planted in soil; they gather all the food they need from the air and water around them.

Many play hosts to insects and even some small animals live in and on these air plants. Some have lovely flowers that attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies.

Rainforest Flowers

Rainforest Flowers: Bromeliad Orchids grow wild in the tropical rainforests. Many are the “epiphyte” variety and lodge themselves on a host such as a tree.

Many are terrestrial though, growing like most other varieties of plants, with their roots firmly planted in the soil.

A further example of a rainforest flower is a bromeliad. The bromeliad has leaves similar to those of a pineapple and collects water in its center.

There are varieties of insects, lizards and even tiny frogs that make homes in these miniature pools of water. More commonly known flowers such as hibiscus, are a familiar sight in the tropical rainforest.

A flower not as common is the Rafflesia which can grow to 3 feet 5.7 inches, making it the largest flower in the world.

A rainforest is a marvel of nature. Whether you are searching for a rainforest plant to feed you or rainforest flower to adorn you, the choices are many.

We have mentioned just a few here to stimulate you into exploring more of the fascinating world of the rainforest.
