Types of Flowers

With the multitude of flowers available for your flower gardens, being able to identify the types of flowers can seem daunting.

Different types of flowers can be categorized into groups, based on their attributes. Some flowers are annuals, going through their entire life cycle in one growing season, and some are perennials, returning each year and multiplying.

But there is more to the classification of flowers than this. By using flower guide that identify flowers by common and botanical names, and individual characteristics and growing habits, we're able to select the appropriate flowers for our gardens.

Here is a breakdown of the basic types of flowers available.

Edible Flowers
By identifying the types of flowers that are edible and having a little fun experimenting with them in our favorite recipes, we can expand our palate considerably.

Ground Cover Flowers
Ground covers are a great way to fill in bare areas in the landscape. There are several varieties of ground covers available, including perennials, evergreens and even flowering types. Ground cover flowers can add a splash of color to an area that would otherwise be unworkable.

Hawaii Tropical Flowers
Leis are traditionally presented to visitors upon arrival and departure from Hawaii and are made from an assortment of many of these flowers, so visitors can enjoy them all.

Japanese Flowers
By including traditional Japanese flowers in the garden, you will create a serene landscape that reflects the true spirit of the Japanese garden.

Perennial Flowers
By selecting perennial flowers that work well in your site and planning the placement based on size, bloom time, color and fragrance, you can have an all-season garden of beauty.

Rare Flowers
Any plant or flower that grows in a very specific and limited location is considered rare; and any plant or flower that exists in limited numbers is also considered rare. A plant that fits both categories is extremely rare.

Shade Flowers
Providing colorful flowers in a shady area need not be a challenge. There are numerous shade flowers available, blooming at various times and providing numerous colors and textures.
